School Background

Portland South Primary School is located in the south-west corner of the State, a distance of 360km from Melbourne, and was established in 1962 to serve the needs of the many young families moving into a growing residential area. Our school community works together to collaboratively nurture, motivate and educate our children to become inquiring and passionate lifelong learners. Portland South Primary School fosters a love of learning.

Teacher efficacy and its link to improved student achievement and growth underpins our philosophy. At Portland South, we have great diversity within our student cohort. We strongly believe that we can make a difference to the life of every child, no matter what their background or life experiences. We explicitly teach Social Emotional skills to students throughout the school, so that students develop the understanding, strategies and skills that support a positive sense of self, promote respectful relationships and build student capacity to recognize and manage their own emotions.

The school community and members of school council are committed to ensuring that all students reach their maximum potential in a safe, supportive and caring learning environment. We have proactive teachers and dedicated support staff who work alongside each other to help all children achieve to the best of their ability. Our staff have high expectations and we aim to provide the best education possible for all students, ensuring they develop a wide variety of skills that will enable them to take responsibility for their own learning and to prepare them for an ever-changing world. The school is very proud of the commitment and dedication of all of its staff.
